Surgery tomorrow (Samuel)

Back to blogging and yet going to keep this super brief.

We are at Shriners Hospital in Portland with Samuel tonight. Early in the a.m. We’ll get him up and bathed for the second time in anti-infection solution. He will be having a couple of procedures that will hopefully increase his mobility and decrease the discomfort he has been having in his left leg.

Just wanted to jot down two big blessings that we experienced during pre op today.

First, he knows how to put on such a happy brave face to anyone outside our family. One way God has seen to care for Sam has been to lead us to Shriners where it is standard procedure (we were told and saw on the intake forms) to have three options stated to gauge patient pain levels. One is verbal, one is facial and the third is by observer. Well considering we have had to explain his pain tolerance and brave face to mot of the medical professionals we’ve come across, this was an enormous answer to a need that Samuel has. We checked “observer”!

Second, the anasthesiologist has offered five levels of pain management (fifth covered by the surgeon post op): versed drink, gas, IV drip, and epidural-like freezing and finally oral pain medication. HUGE answer to prayer based on what we’ve been too by BTDT parents.

One day soon I will record more of the amazing ways we’ve seen God work these passed couple weeks. For now it’s enough to know He hasn’t forgotten about this little fellow that has travelled so far in such a short life. He’s in the details and I’m going to be watching for Him all throughout the day tomorrow.

Aaaaat Laaaaaaast….

I have had Etta James’ song in my head a lot this week.  It isn’t because the songstress legend passed on recently.  It isn’t because I’ve been feeling a little romantic around the edges with Valentine’s Day just around the corner.  Nope.  It’s because of Samuel.

When we were on our adoption trip to bring Samuel home last year this time, his first string of words to us that made us truly chuckle were, “Happy Birthday to Yewwwwww!”

He said that sasme string of words again and again throughout the past year.  In doctor’s offices.  To confused relatives.  Every S.I.N.G.L.E. time one of his siblings, cousins, uncles, great grandparents (you get the picture) had a birthday.

Finally – AT LAST! – today is his big day!

I hear him giggling upstairs waiting not so patiently with his Dad while I make breakfast (okay, type this post, but the bacon is still in the oven, people).  The balloons are ready.  The presents are stacked on the sideboard.  A whole host of his favourite things are on the agenda for today.

And then I remember Hannah’s Facebook post this morning.  Her little Pumpkin has a birthday today too.  And a lump forms in my throat and I stop and pray.  I’m so thankful that my little Xiao Ba is here with us.  But Pumpkin?  She still waits for her own special first birthday home with her very own family.  And I pray some more.

She is every bit deserving.  Every bit as loved as her “big brother” Samuel.  Because it wasn’t too long ago that folks said the same thing about him.  So cute.  So sweet.  Oh I wish someone would step out in faith and make him their own son.  I should know – I was once the one saying those words.

And now?  I am so very blessed.  He is a delight beyond measure.  A delight to His Father too.

Just like Pumpkin.

Ahhh the memories

Just now as I was walking past Grace’s room on my way to bed, I had a sudden urge to check in on her.  You see, she hasn’t been sleeping well for the past couple weeks and normally we hear from her every so often in the couple hours between her bedtime and ours.  So, walking past I suddenly wondered if she was actually asleep.

I opened the door and saw a quick movement of the blanket, followed by a very still and motionless form lying there.  Hmmmm this looks familiar.  🙂

I quickly threw off her blanket only to find her buried underneath with her new Leap Pad from Christmas.

I hear her intake a deep breath, “Okay.  I was doing this.”

Good for you, I think to myself.  You admitted you did wrong.  (Little proud moment there.  Trust me, if you lived in this house, you’d understand.)

I took the Leap Pad.  Told her I’d be keeping it for tonight, that I loved her and good night.  And down the hall to my bedroom I go.

Once there, I explained to Stephen what had happened.  Then I followed it up with a chuckle and asked him to reminisce.

“Sooo I remember reading under the covers and hiding books, what did you do secretly in your room after bedtime?  Did you ever get caught?”

He shakes his head no and then breaks into a blush and a grin…

“Actually, my parents bought an old used black and white tv one time.  I carted it into my room and put it in the closet  where I could see it from my bed.  That night I rigged a couple of skipping ropes that I could pull from my bed in order to shut my closet doors in a hurry if they suddenly came in after it was lights out time.

Sure enough, long after bedtime, my folks came in – my room was across from theirs.  I quickly shut the closet doors and suddenly I saw the flaw in my plan.  There was a bright glow emitted from the TV screen in the closet.  The volume didn’t hurt either!”

We had a good laugh over that!  Sometimes it’s so nice when our kids just plain old behave like, well, kids!

Post ER visit update & a little party is in the air

We made it through today’s ER visit in a record 1 hour.  We left with a sedated MRI booked for December, and a follow up visit with the head of pediatric orthopedics to follow.  We are so relieved to know that Samuel’s case is being pursued and feel comfortable with things moving forward.  Thank you for your prayers!

At this point he is mobile and he is making use of his other three limbs to climb and get around.  We’re really thankful to get this MRI as a baseline for his surgery in a few months too.  It’s apparent that God is working things out for his good in the midst of it all.

And as for today….

It’s Grace’s 9th birthday!

I have a pretty red dress wearin’ daughter that is super excited about a few packages that are hidden safely away in our
storage room.

Off to get ready!

What would you think if you saw this face?

Or how about this one?

Or this?

Yeah.

I know.

Cute, right?

Unfortunately, this is the face that Samuel shows the world.

Huh? Why is that unfortunate?

Well, this past week we have been to the ER twice.

Samuel hurt his left leg somehow and he’s letting us know in no uncertain terms that he’s in pain.

However, once we arrive at the ER, this….

is the face that the doctors get to see.

Fortunately, our second trip scored us a specialist who truly heard us and was able to look past all that cuteness.

He sent us home with instructions to keep all that sweetness and light in rest mode over the weekend.  Hopefully the injury is soft tissue related and will show improvement.  If things continue on this path though, we are heading back into the ER on Wednesday morning.  Next steps are a sedated MRI.

It’s painful to see him hurting and not know how to help him.

And it hurts to see him try to be so winsome all the time.

He’s a special little man and we can’t wait for the day when he is free to be just Samuel.

 And not Samuel on stage.

Will you keep him in your prayers for the next bit?

Wanna peek at my Christmas card?

Design#9

or maybe this…

or maybe this one right here…

Pretty good looking family, eh?

Well, they are a good looking family, and one of these cards is going to be ending up in your mailbox (real, virtual or bloggy) in a couple weeks.

When I read that my one of my dear e-friends was going to be designing these one of kind Christmas Photo Card Designs I was excited.  I love it when I can find a way to simplify life around the holidays.  This was too easy!

Then when I realized that it was a way for her to raise funds to bring home their newest blesssing from China I was even more excited!  Their newest daughter is beautiful, bright eyed and was born with life threatening heart disease.  Her new family is no stranger to parenting bright eyed, beautiful children.  And neither are they strangers to parenting kids with life altering medical needs.

Honestly, I am not going to push you there, but I think you just may enjoy a trip over to her fundraising blog.  She’s got some other great items too (anyone have a Barbie lover out there?).

Journey to Li’l Bit

You won’t be disappointed, especially once you catch sight of Li’l Bit herself.  Such a sweetheart!

Question: How early do you put up your Christmas decorations?

We have a tradition of putting ours up right around my birthday (mid-Nov.).   I know many of you are from the US and begin decorating right after your Thanksgiving.

I have to admit, I don’t know what it is, but for the first time in about 5 years I am itching to put them up now (actually since before Halloween.  If I really think about it, I think it is due to the fact that we have all of our family members actually home this fall.  No looming cloud of paperwork.  No wondering if they are safe.

I have to say, it’s a good great feeling!

Off to start our school day.  Have a good one!

{And no comments about my closet.  ;)}

Hide and Seek

When I can put on my Mama hat and take off my teacher hat, there is something so very cute about how Hide and Seek sounds in this house.

Yes, I said sounds.

As of today (November 7, 2011), Grace has been with us for almost 2 years, Garnet for almost 4 years and Samuel for almost 9 months.

On their own they have cute speech patterns that others discreetly chuckle over sometimes.

Together, they down right make me smile.  And look for my ear plugs…

Grace: Okay.  Now it’s my turn to count.  1-2-3…

Samuel: {loud shrieking giggles fading away as he races to follow Garnet to a good hiding spot}

Garnet: SAMUEL!  (loud huffing sigh)

Grace: Samu-well, come here!  You can’t make so much noise!  (she yells)

Garnet: Wight!  You can’t tell Jie jie where Ge ge is!

Samuel: Oh Tay!

Grace: (goes back to counting)  1-2-3

Samuel: (rather than hiding, begins to count too)  1-2-4-18

Grace: Samu-well!

Samuel: Huh?  Whaaaaaaaaht?

And off they go…
