Walking Tall

YouTube Preview Image

Samuel has been working hard on his walking all summer.  We’ve had the use of a great little wheelchair and castor car and he’s never left far behind the other kids.  However, when he was given his first set of “boots”, he began toddling around with the use of a little walker.  Over time he remained upright for hours at a time, but with a bit of a slump to his back posture.  The walker was sort of pulled along behind him and he would affect a really funny pose in order to move as fast as usual but still drag the walker behind himself.

Yesterday he was given the chance to show off his new abdominal muscles and give his back a break.  He is pretty slow once again (whew!), but we know in no time he’ll be an old hand at this and be on to the next phase.

  1. How wonderful! He looks quite confident! I’m curious as to the process. What is his next step in his walking tall abilities?

  2. Hi Cheri,
Well, at this point we are working to unassisted standing and his taking a few first steps. It is sort of like a child who is very hesitant to learn to walk and holds onto crawling longer than one would expect. We see him balance and get upright without support (with and without his “boots”). With the boots on he gets a bit nervous though, and won’t take the steps. Unfortunately, he needs the boots to create a flat walking surface and a straight back. Crawling is a difficult thing, looking forard, as many who choose to crawl end up with wrist pain and even damage to shoulders, etc. So, we are taking it slowly.

  3. Yesssssss! Go, Samuel, go! Ooooooh, I wish Canada wasn’t so far away, I’d love to hug your precious boy, Shelley! Thank you so much for posting, I’ve been so very curious to hear how Samuel’s walking was coming along, but I sure know you guys are super-busy. Love to your family from Texas!
