A few modifications…

We were in Portland this week for another post-surgical visit for Samuel. We were told that he will be undergoing another surgery within the next 6 months to a year. This next one will help his gait a fair bit and will involve creating a better hip “cup” for his leg to sit in. The surgeon will basically carve out a better fit in his hip area and and reinforcing wires to help it to seat better. He currently has to swing that leg a fair bit in order to get forward motion. Hard to explain. We were expecting the surgery to be a possibility, but perhaps not so soon. We’ll head back to check on things in a few months and will find out more then.

Samuel also had an adjustment made to his boots! His Portland prosthetist has made them a much wider base. He was totally thrilled to get to standing on his own without a stick of furniture to hold onto. He tried a few steps with them and was pretty pleased. We then took them off to make the super long drive home. You see, they no longer fit in his pant legs and lets just say that Mana was glad that she’d bought Sam new undies as he got to show them off around the O&P lab and for the videos they take of him in the motion lab. Lol

I’ll get to altering his clothes tomorrow!

(The glow stick was courtesy of some members of the National Guard that were visiting. Samuel received a glow stick lanyard, a puzzle, mini football, art kit, Dino stickers and a monster truck toy all within 4 hours. The community, volunteers and staff really love spoiling the kids and teens that are in their care. Actually, I think they really just love the kids and teens. Period.)

A little cuteness sent from me…

How is he doing?

The #1 question we get asked these days is:

How is Samuel faring?

Pretty good, if he says so himself!

(Oh no!  She isn’t satisfied with only one quick pic!)

Samuel’s leg seems to be healing well.  We fought to keep his incisions clean, closed and infection free.

With only a couple weeks left until his post-surgical follow up visit, we think he’s doing great!

(You’re too funny, Mom!)

He is still restricted in a few areas likfe weight bearing and bathing, but in true Samuel style he is managing to work around those.

(Maybe if I hide my grin she’ll put away the camera…)

And he keeps us in stitches throughout the day in spite of it all.

(I can’t control it.  The giggles are winning!)

His favourite new thing is to ride around on his padded tummy scooter at breakneck speeds throughout the house.

(GAHHHHHHH!  Mom!)

And now we are much less worried about him putting weight on his leg.

(That does it!  I give up.  I’m going to dive for cover and hope she can’t find me.  giggle…giggle…giggle  Oh drat!  She heard me!)

Now we just need to keep his bicycle helmet firmly strapped on to protect his little noggin’!

Aaaaat Laaaaaaast….

I have had Etta James’ song in my head a lot this week.  It isn’t because the songstress legend passed on recently.  It isn’t because I’ve been feeling a little romantic around the edges with Valentine’s Day just around the corner.  Nope.  It’s because of Samuel.

When we were on our adoption trip to bring Samuel home last year this time, his first string of words to us that made us truly chuckle were, “Happy Birthday to Yewwwwww!”

He said that sasme string of words again and again throughout the past year.  In doctor’s offices.  To confused relatives.  Every S.I.N.G.L.E. time one of his siblings, cousins, uncles, great grandparents (you get the picture) had a birthday.

Finally – AT LAST! – today is his big day!

I hear him giggling upstairs waiting not so patiently with his Dad while I make breakfast (okay, type this post, but the bacon is still in the oven, people).  The balloons are ready.  The presents are stacked on the sideboard.  A whole host of his favourite things are on the agenda for today.

And then I remember Hannah’s Facebook post this morning.  Her little Pumpkin has a birthday today too.  And a lump forms in my throat and I stop and pray.  I’m so thankful that my little Xiao Ba is here with us.  But Pumpkin?  She still waits for her own special first birthday home with her very own family.  And I pray some more.

She is every bit deserving.  Every bit as loved as her “big brother” Samuel.  Because it wasn’t too long ago that folks said the same thing about him.  So cute.  So sweet.  Oh I wish someone would step out in faith and make him their own son.  I should know – I was once the one saying those words.

And now?  I am so very blessed.  He is a delight beyond measure.  A delight to His Father too.

Just like Pumpkin.

Post ER visit update & a little party is in the air

We made it through today’s ER visit in a record 1 hour.  We left with a sedated MRI booked for December, and a follow up visit with the head of pediatric orthopedics to follow.  We are so relieved to know that Samuel’s case is being pursued and feel comfortable with things moving forward.  Thank you for your prayers!

At this point he is mobile and he is making use of his other three limbs to climb and get around.  We’re really thankful to get this MRI as a baseline for his surgery in a few months too.  It’s apparent that God is working things out for his good in the midst of it all.

And as for today….

It’s Grace’s 9th birthday!

I have a pretty red dress wearin’ daughter that is super excited about a few packages that are hidden safely away in our
storage room.

Off to get ready!

What would you think if you saw this face?

Or how about this one?

Or this?

Yeah.

I know.

Cute, right?

Unfortunately, this is the face that Samuel shows the world.

Huh? Why is that unfortunate?

Well, this past week we have been to the ER twice.

Samuel hurt his left leg somehow and he’s letting us know in no uncertain terms that he’s in pain.

However, once we arrive at the ER, this….

is the face that the doctors get to see.

Fortunately, our second trip scored us a specialist who truly heard us and was able to look past all that cuteness.

He sent us home with instructions to keep all that sweetness and light in rest mode over the weekend.  Hopefully the injury is soft tissue related and will show improvement.  If things continue on this path though, we are heading back into the ER on Wednesday morning.  Next steps are a sedated MRI.

It’s painful to see him hurting and not know how to help him.

And it hurts to see him try to be so winsome all the time.

He’s a special little man and we can’t wait for the day when he is free to be just Samuel.

 And not Samuel on stage.

Will you keep him in your prayers for the next bit?

Hide and Seek

When I can put on my Mama hat and take off my teacher hat, there is something so very cute about how Hide and Seek sounds in this house.

Yes, I said sounds.

As of today (November 7, 2011), Grace has been with us for almost 2 years, Garnet for almost 4 years and Samuel for almost 9 months.

On their own they have cute speech patterns that others discreetly chuckle over sometimes.

Together, they down right make me smile.  And look for my ear plugs…

Grace: Okay.  Now it’s my turn to count.  1-2-3…

Samuel: {loud shrieking giggles fading away as he races to follow Garnet to a good hiding spot}

Garnet: SAMUEL!  (loud huffing sigh)

Grace: Samu-well, come here!  You can’t make so much noise!  (she yells)

Garnet: Wight!  You can’t tell Jie jie where Ge ge is!

Samuel: Oh Tay!

Grace: (goes back to counting)  1-2-3

Samuel: (rather than hiding, begins to count too)  1-2-4-18

Grace: Samu-well!

Samuel: Huh?  Whaaaaaaaaht?

And off they go…

Lunch?!

On the Menu Today…

Green Slime

&

Insects

Ummmmm, no.

Garnet has been taking a certain medication for awhile.  One of the possible side effects is loss of appetite.  And the accompanying Mommy worry.  He doesn’t have a lot of spare change to lose, if you catch my drift.

Bring on the Green Slime aka a green vegetable based protein drink.  I think the picture clearly explains why my children have named it as such.

Do you think his appetite will return for supper?

As for item #2 on said lunch menu.

Well, all it took was a shriek from my littlest dude of, “Mom!  ‘Pider!”, with wild finger pointing at his luncheon plate.

Well after practically breaking my neck from the race across the kitchen, I soon saw the evil beast critter in question.

Okay, once my heart calmed down from the thought of a spider crawling in my son’s salad, I shook my head and thought about it for a minute.

This little guy was fairly cold to the touch.  He was crawling in Samuel’s salad which, I confess, originally came from a wonderful little pre- washed and bagged package.  After our first round of the salad TWO nights ago, it was put into a plastic container and into the fridge.

Talk about survival against all odds.

And, well, yuck!

I kind of felt bad when I took him outside into the 10 degree Celsius weather.  God bless him.

But oooo – yuck!

Hopefully Samuel’s appetite will have returned for supper too, as after I had extricated the ladybug from his foliage, he quickly scrambled down from his chair and said, “All done!”

Can you blame him?  hehe

Breaking the Ice & a Sneak Peek…

I woke up super early this morning with the determination that I absoutely needed to post something… ANYTHING… on the blog.  I have missed my little blog world so much!

So in an effort to break the ice, I share with any of you still out there, my beautiful daughter…

Isn’t she fabulous!

🙂

And for the Sneak Peek…

Take a look at what is taking shape for Samuel over here on The Almy Family Journal.

Makes me get all choked up every s.i.n.g.l.e. time I think about it.

Here’s to a new beginning in blogging…

I hope!
