{"id":163,"date":"2010-05-05T02:15:25","date_gmt":"2010-05-05T09:15:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.learningtogetherathome.com\/?p=163"},"modified":"2010-05-05T02:18:38","modified_gmt":"2010-05-05T09:18:38","slug":"having-the-talk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.learningtogetherathome.com\/?p=163","title":{"rendered":"Having THE Talk"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Oh, not the one most parents would think of.\u00a0 No birds or bees here.\u00a0 Well there was some of that, but &#8211; oh whatever.<\/p>\n<p>The talk I&#8217;m referring to is the story of my youngest daughter&#8217;s beginnings.\u00a0 She was baby role playing with me (a normal thing for her and I that I believe is giving her a chance to catch up so to speak.) and I had the opportunity to take it one step farther and once again bring up her birth parents.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Before now she would always look at me with that look.\u00a0 <em>You know the look.\u00a0 <\/em>The one that says, &#8220;Haha, aren&#8217;t you a funny Mommy.\u00a0 I like make believe, but can we move on to a new subject?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But this time, I again recounted as much of her story as I have been told and I took it a step farther.\u00a0 I drew pictures.\u00a0 <em>Ahem.\u00a0 So I&#8217;m not a brilliant artiste.\u00a0 <\/em>She really engaged with me in the drawing.\u00a0 She helped me with details, asked me questions and then we had an opportunity to talk about her coming to Canada, her feelings, the works.\u00a0 But the best part?\u00a0 The fact that she and I were finally able to talk about it.<\/p>\n<p>You see, I had broached the subject previously.\u00a0 I&#8217;d rehearsed openly with her as she was in the early stages of English Vocaulary development.\u00a0 I&#8217;d spoken of other babies in our family.\u00a0 I&#8217;d used all the correct (or should I say, consciously chosen)terminology in front of her.\u00a0 And then all of a sudden, tonight she had that curious sort of look\u00a0that said, \u00a0&#8220;Tell me more, Mom.&#8221;\u00a0 <em>Finally<\/em> she got it.<\/p>\n<p>And you know what she told me?\u00a0<em> No one had ever told her this story before.\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n<p>While I am delighted to be the one to engage her on this level, I am pretty sure that she has a variety of ideas as to how she came to the orphanage.\u00a0 I&#8217;m sure she heard plenty.\u00a0 Was it her own personal story though?\u00a0 I doubt it.\u00a0 Did not knowing about the fact that her life is on a path and that her destiny was to be more than the orphanage life as she knew it affect her determination not to want to meld with our family?\u00a0 Yeah.\u00a0 I&#8217;m pretty sure it added to it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But (and this is a big BUT), I am so glad that I got to be the one to talk to her about God&#8217;s bigger plan for her.\u00a0 God didn&#8217;t create the trauma in her life, but he is definitely the redeemer and the ultimate healer of wounds.\u00a0 I can&#8217;t be the balm she needs, but I can keep leading her back to the One who has a special plan for her.<\/p>\n<p>It was a good talk.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #808000;\">For I know the plans I have for (Grace),&#8221; declares the LORD, &#8220;plans to prosper\u00a0(Grace) and not to harm (Grace), plans to give\u00a0(Grace) hope and a future.\u00a0 Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV)<\/span><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Oh, not the one most parents would think of.\u00a0 No birds or bees here.\u00a0 Well there was some of that, but &#8211; oh whatever.
