Have you all heard of the Flat Stanley<\/em> <\/a>series of books?\u00a0 I highly recommend them for the early chapter book reader.\u00a0<\/p>\n

My nephew Lane recently sent James and Garnet a “Flat Lane”.\u00a0 He drew a small cut out picture of himself and sent it along with a letter.\u00a0 The letter asked for James and Garnet to take Flat Lane on some adventures, document them and then send them back to him.\u00a0 Lane then has to create a report and present it to his class.\u00a0<\/p>\n

I travelled to\u00a0James and Garnet’s family\u00a0and was just in time to celebrate the holiday with them.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Lunar Calendar<\/p>\n

Many people around the world follow a different calendar than the one we are used to.\u00a0 It follows the movement of the moon and has a 12 year cycle, with each year representing a different animal.\u00a0 Have you heard?\u00a0 This year is the Year of the Rabbit.\u00a0 If you are born this year or are 12 or 24 or 36 or 48 or\u2026\u00a0 this year, you are said to be\u00a0 lucky, kind and peaceful!<\/p>\n

Symbols of Blessings<\/p>\n

There are many special foods and symbols that are eaten and used at this time of year.\u00a0 Eating a whole fish is said to bring you more money.\u00a0 Dining on long unbroken noodles will give you long life.\u00a0 If you want happiness and good luck, then eating eggs and round fruits like pomelo and oranges are said to help you.\u00a0 These oranges were delicious!<\/p>\n

Celebrating Spring<\/p>\n

Lunar New Year marks the coming of spring time.\u00a0 Many families have fresh foods and flowers around to celebrate the return to warm weather and a new growing season.\u00a0 It\u2019s not too warm here, so this family bought some flowers to add to their spring holiday.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Getting Ready<\/p>\n

To prepare for Chinese New Year there is lots to do!\u00a0 I was there just as the family was getting ready.\u00a0 They all got new haircuts, a new suit of fancy silk dress clothes, the house was cleaned from top to bottom and lots of food was bought and made, including jiaozi<\/em> (yummy dumplings with all kinds of fillings!).\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\"\"\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Bringing in the New Year is LOUD!<\/p>\n

There is a story that talks about how the Chinese people were saved from a large and hungry Dragon.\u00a0 By using loud firecrackers they were able to save their people.\u00a0 In some places at the New Year, there are LOTS of firecrackers and even a dragon dance with people acting out the story!\u00a0 I hear the family is going to watch a dragon dance soon, but I had to head back to school before it began.\u00a0 I\u2019m kind of happy as the one on the book scared me enough!\u00a0 Whew!<\/p>\n

Gifts<\/p>\n

My favourite part!\u00a0 People like to give gifts at Chinese New Year, but they are different than the ones we give at other holidays.\u00a0 Children and unmarried young adults receive Hong Bao <\/em>(Red Envelopes with money inside).\u00a0 Adults give each other flowers or fruit.<\/p>\n

The family gave me some to share with you and your classmates!\u00a0 The money they used is really yummy!<\/p>\n

Family and Friends<\/p>\n

Lunar New Year is a time for family to come together.\u00a0 People travel long distances to be together with their loved ones.\u00a0 There is much laughing and chatter as families make the jiaozi<\/em> or set off firecrackers.\u00a0 I missed my friend Lane, so I asked them to mail me back to you.\u00a0 Thanks for sending me on such an exciting adventure!<\/p>\n
