much to\u00a0the kids&#8217; delight.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.learningtogetherathome.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/001.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-125\" title=\"Rollie Pollie\" src=\"http:\/\/www.learningtogetherathome.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/001-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.learningtogetherathome.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/001-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.learningtogetherathome.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/001-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<address style=\"text-align: center;\">I<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> am usually<\/span> able to take it in stride.\u00a0 <\/address>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">It&#8217;s like we say here in our &#8220;herd&#8221; (what we have taken to calling our growing family),<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">&#8220;We don&#8217;t match on the outside, but our goal is that we match up to Jesus on the inside.&#8221;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Unique gifts, free spirits, strong determination, bold imagination and loyal to the core.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">That is what we hope for our kids.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Of late, the questions have been both a mix of gentle and, well, not so gentle.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">And my responses have been varied as well.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">You know,\u00a0some gentle and some not so gentle.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Am I proud of it?\u00a0 No.\u00a0 Not so much.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">But, it has given me reason to think about the two classes of questions that I get asked.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0The first is regarding adoption in general and usually allows for a nice balance of give and take in the conversation.\u00a0 I love\u00a0discussing adoption in general.\u00a0 In fact, it&#8217;s one of those times that I get positively chatty.\u00a0 And I&#8217;m not one that finds chit chat easy.\u00a0 (No comment, my dear husband.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The other type involves questions directed to me about my own children&#8217;s adoptions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Now, here is where it gets dicey.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">As a parent, \u00a0I feel it&#8217;s my repsonsibility to create a safe haven in our family for all the members in it.\u00a0 So talking about the most trauma filled moments of my children&#8217;s lives (and that includes my bio kids and my husband as well) to anyone wanting to know more details than have been offered up for conversation gets me going through a little speedy evaluation process.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">First: Go on Red Alert<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The warning bells go off and I begin to silently evaluate the words I am hearing or the questions I am being asked.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Second:<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">How much information are they asking for ?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Is this curiosity or probing?\u00a0 Do they want to know more about International Adoption, the orphan crisis in the world or about what makes my kids tick?\u00a0 Are they wondering about Steve&#8217;s and my choices?\u00a0 Is this something that the Holy Spirit is doing in their lives?\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Third: <\/span><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Can I in good conscience answer that question on behalf of my children?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I will have to answer to my children&#8217;s adult selves and even sooner to their somewhat more angst ridden teen years.\u00a0 My current teen has challenged me to hold tight to the familiy boundaries.\u00a0 I have no doubt that any one of my other kids will want the same from me in the future years.\u00a0 I need to preserve and protect their precious info.\u00a0 Can I do this and blog?\u00a0 How about sharing God&#8217;s heart for the orphan?\u00a0 This is something that I am working out the best I can.\u00a0 I think it may prove to be *my* biggest lesson in all this.\u00a0 Balance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Fourth:<\/span><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> The Bob and Weave<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Which requires me to choose:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0a) Give enough info in\u00a0order to\u00a0keep the converation light.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">b)\u00a0Change the subject<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">c) Walk away and ignore the questioner all together.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">This is one time when answering &#8220;c&#8221; or &#8220;all of the above&#8221; may not be the\u00a0wisest\u00a0choice.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">This is where I really take into consideration who is doing the asking.\u00a0 I used to think that all &#8220;strangers&#8221; such as those in line at the grocery store or or the lady at the post office counter would always fall into the categories of b or c.\u00a0 Really how could it be any of their business?\u00a0 For the people little closer in, I assumed that their being in a close relationship with our family would allow them a bit more leeway in what I would answer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #808080;\">Now I know that there is a lot more grey.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Perhaps it is because we live in a smaller community.\u00a0 Perhaps it is because some of those same people that I used to think of as strangers have been brought to opening up about their own stories. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I am honoured to be able to hear them. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">People like the young service technician who came to our home a few weeks ago and out of the blue told me\u00a0very simply that\u00a0he had a\u00a0tragic childhood, but that his aunt and uncle\u00a0had reached out to add him to their already full household in order to give him a great launching place for his later adulthood.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Or the older\u00a0female lab tech at our local clinic who was so taken by our brave little girl (in for yet another round of invasive bloodwork) and just paused for a moment and said, &#8220;Bless her heart&#8221;, her eyes\u00a0a little moist.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And no, we aren&#8217;t from the Deep South.<\/span><\/h5>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">She simply looked at our girl and really saw her &#8211;
