On November 16, 2009, one year ago today,\u00a0we anxiously waited for our tour bus to crawl through rush hour traffic on its way to the Civil Affairs Office of\u00a0 Guangdong Province.<\/span><\/p>\n

We nervously rode the slow elevator upstairs.<\/span><\/p>\n

We shed our coats, readied our paperwork, prepped our cameras, held our breath.<\/span><\/p>\n

And then there she was.\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Entering the room timidly from behind a curtain.<\/span><\/p>\n

Smile firmly attached to her face.<\/span><\/p>\n

My heart stopped.<\/span><\/p>\n

I could not catch my breath.<\/span><\/p>\n

There she\u00a0 was.<\/span><\/p>\n

I pulled her stiffened body towards me and embraced her gently.<\/span><\/p>\n

She called us each by name.<\/span><\/p>\n

We fumbled over hers.<\/span><\/p>\n

She came to us bearing photos, gifts, memories of a life lived.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We spent many minutes poring over the photos.<\/span><\/p>\n

She would chatter away and point with her long slender fingers.<\/span><\/p>\n

I think we all fell into shock.<\/span><\/p>\n

This was no apparition.<\/span><\/p>\n

Here was our girl.<\/span><\/h2>\n

Our daughter.<\/span><\/p>\n

Our sister.<\/span><\/p>\n

Our granddaughter.<\/span><\/p>\n

Her Mother.<\/span><\/p>\n

Her Father.<\/span><\/p>\n

Her siblings.<\/span><\/p>\n

Her grandparents.<\/span><\/p>\n

She was so beautiful and intelligent and confident.<\/span><\/p>\n

She had so many who had invested in her.<\/span><\/p>\n

Who cared about her.<\/span><\/p>\n

And suddenly the real little girl was appearing before us.<\/span><\/p>\n

The pre-drawn image\u00a0fell away and the reality was there.<\/span><\/h2>\n

And again, it took our breath away.<\/span><\/p>\n

The beginning had arrived.<\/span><\/p>\n

We love you little Grace Qiao.<\/span><\/h2>\n

And so we need you to know… <\/span><\/p>\n

We love that you are such a strong young lady.<\/span><\/p>\n

We love your direct spirit, your willingness to probe until you understand.<\/span><\/p>\n

We love your imaginative artistry, your ability to strive for accuracy and creativity in your play.<\/span><\/p>\n

We love that you have a whole pile of people who stand behind your need to grow and love and be loved.<\/span><\/p>\n

And nothing, not an ocean nor a fractured language can ever stop these people from caring for you Miss Grace.<\/span><\/p>\n

Because we are so blessed to know you and to be known by you.<\/span><\/p>\n

“Forever and ever?”, you say.<\/span><\/p>\n

Yes, sweetheart.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

Forever and Ever and Ever and Ever…..<\/span><\/h2>\n

With our whole hearts we promise.<\/span><\/p>\n
