Samuel’s Warriors

Today is Orphan Sunday.

Many churches around North America choose this day to bring awareness to the enormous global Orphan Crisis.

There are numerous ways that one can help those who wait for families (at least 98 million, although the numbers have been tabulated into the 200 million range by some).

So many options:

  • befriend a foster child, family or foster parent group in your community
  • give financially or in kind
  • sponsor children abroad
  •  help a family bring home their child
  • adopt a child and give them a place to call their forever home

So many ways.

One other way that is not often mentioned directly is all of the behind the scenes work of a secret army of tireless men and women.

They do not hold earthly weapons.

They do not always congregate in companies and legions.

But they do daily storm the gates of Heaven for those that wait,

the Orphan.

To many of us, the Orphan is a faceless, nameless blur.

A Concept.

An Abstract Idea.

And then sometimes, Someone, a Face, will cross their paths and suddenly that Warrior Heart rises up and we can do nothing but rally and plead for that One.

That Orphan.

That Child.

These warriors sometimes are seen.

And sometimes they are not.

Sometimes they share their passion with others and let them know that the need is great.

And sometimes they quietly interceed for that Child.

Until Heaven moves.

And that child waits no more.

My son was that One.

He was abandoned.

Placed.

At the gates of a rural civil affairs office.

And then he was Found.

Taken into the care of a Foster Grandmother.

After 18 months, the Director found a new place for him.

A New Day had come.

His photo was posted online.

And many of those same Warriors began to rise up.

Across an ocean Hearts of a Family began to be stirred.

And another Battle was won.

Our Son would wait no more.

So today, on Orphan Sunday, I ask that you consider the ideas to help that I posted above.

But perhaps more so, I ask you to rise up alongside these quiet Warriors.

Join them and fight.

Plead.

Pray.

Trust.

But do not forget.

Until the One who waits,

becomes None.

Once our eyes are opened, we can not pretend we do not know what to do.

God, who weighs our hearts and keeps our souls, knows that we know, and holds us responsible to act.

Proverbs 24:12

May I, with {MUCH} gratitude, share with you just a few folks off of the long list of Samuel’s Warriors?

These are just a few of the ones that have public blogs.

They have invested finances, time, prayer and much heart in advocating for our little man.

Will you say a pray of thanksgiving for each of them and the many who have contacted us?

A Poignant Post

My Mom introduced me to Life as a Pilgrim awhile back.

I was catching up on her blog this morning and when I came to this post, I was so taken with her photos from a Chinese orphanage wrapped in sweet prayerful prose.

Her post is entitled, “We wait for you to Ache“.

It just so fully describes why so many of us advocate and fully “ache” over not only the orphan crisis, but the each and every one of the orphans in the world.

 The photos are adorable on their own.

 Enjoy!

GIVEAWAY starting today!

UPDATE: Can you hear me cheering you on?

I have a minimum of 100 hits a day on here and I know that you all have big hearts from the

 e-mails I receive.

The first person to enter this Giveaway will not only receive their entries, but that person will also receive the Audiobook, Safely Home, by Randy Alcorn!

I had a comment about the Audiobooks as well.  If you are like me, you are a reader and prefer the hard copy.  In our house, my husband has little time to spend with a book.  He prefers to listen as he drives.  My teenager, prefers to listen on his I-Pod.  Maybe a little something while you exercise?  Or if you have already read these, perhaps a gift for someone else you were hoping to impact?  The options are endless.  🙂

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Remember this post from awhile back?
Well, as of a couple of days ago, International China Concern  had received donations towards Yang Jing Yuan’s surgeries totalling approximately $4,000 US.
Praise God for His provision for this little one!
The raising of the remaining $26,000 US seems impossible to fathom, but I know that God has both this boy, and his family who are under great pressure to abandon him, absolutely and completely in His sight.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

So, in order to draw attention to Yang Jing Yuan and to ICC, I have decided to hold a little giveaway here on my itty bitty blog.

I would like to hold a draw for a gift pack of the following three Amazing, Life Challenging and Very Popular Resources, all in Audiobook format!

That’s right – these aren’t just any old paperbacks, but full unabridged CD versions, read by the authors themselves!

Now I have to be honest and let you know that each of these has been gently used by Stephen (as in listened through once and put back into their cases) as he has travelled  back and forth to work.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
These CDs are in excellent condition and all *you* need to do is…
Leave a comment or e-mail me at [email protected], letting me know that you did one or all of the following:
1. Posted about the giveaway on your blog and linked back to this post.
2. Tweeted about the giveaway to all your peeps.
3. Made mention of the giveaway on your Facebook account.
and/or (of course),
4. Donated to ICC
(Just click on the word ” ICC” above, I don’t need to know the amount, every single dollar counts!).
You will receive one entry into the giveaway draw for each item you complete and comment on.
That means you can receive up to 4 entries!
 I will leave this giveaway active until the evening of October 22, 2010.
That evening I will have one of my herd draw one generous soul’s name.
After I’ve drawn the winning name, I will post it here on the blog and mail off the prize package!
Here’s a little glimpse about ICC, child abandonment in China and the orphan crisis there.
And thank you so much, in advance, for Taking a Look, Spreading the Word and Sharing some Love.
It’ll make a Big Difference – to a small boy.
 Oh and for a bit of trivia, for while you are watching this documentary, Hengyang is in Hunan, which is also Samuel’s home province.
I know it sounds incredible but…
We have an opportunity to help a family facing an incredible situation.  One that no parent ever in their wildest nightmare wants to face.
The decision to abandon their child in order to save that child’s life.
I posted a few weeks ago about ICC and their Walk the Wall campaign.
Today they sent out a message that made me stop in my tracks.
Steve and I know in our minds that ICC is one of the good organizations.  One of the ones we trust with our hard earned charitable donations.  But also, they are one of the ones on the front lines, one of the organizations out there trying to make a difference to China’s abandonment crisis.
Family by family.
Family to family.
Too romanticized, you think?
Read this.
Urgent surgery for Yang Jing YuanI want to alert you to an urgent medical need in Changsha and to ask for your help.
Yang Jing Yuan is a six-year-old boy we have been working with, along with his family, at the Community Outreach Project. He has a hearing impairment, and a very severe case of Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva, which is a progressive deformity of the spine that is now impacting his ability to breathe properly. The progression of the disease is becoming so serious that there is a very real concern he may not live through the upcoming winter. He has already had 20 bronchitis and pneumonia infections since birth and he may not recover from another.
We have spoken to a surgeon in Shanghai who says that Yang Jing Yuan will require multiple surgeries, including rods being inserted in his back to support his spine. The initial surgery is estimated to cost RMB 200,000 (about USD 30,000) and another surgery in 2-3 years’ time will cost RMB 10,000-20,000 (USD 1,500-3,000).
Yang Jing Yuan’s parents are unable to pay the significant costs. They are already living beyond their means providing their son with physical therapy and education at a school for deaf children. They are also under a lot of pressure from friends and family to give up trying to care for their son. They, however, refuse to abandon the hope of providing a healthy future for their son.
The Community Outreach Project was started for families just like Yang Jing Yuan’s. Its mission is to provide the support and assistance necessary to keep families together. This is the most expensive surgery that ICC has ever committed to, but the prognosis is good. We ask you to stand with us in prayer and finance so together we can continue to seek life to the full for this little boy. If you are able to help by giving a one-time gift of life to Yang Jing Yuan, contact your National Office on 604 322 3119.
Once again, we thank you for your ongoing commitment to ICC and the health of the children in its care.
God Bless
Samantha Hills
Love, hope and opportunity for every disabled child
I firmly believe we can make a huge difference in the life of this little boy and in one Chinese family.
You can find ICC here and a direct link to their donation page here.  Thank you!
“While We Wait…”
I don’t have anything profound to intro this link up, but while it is NOT a link to Samuel (sorry!), just do yourself a favour and take a peek right {here}.
 It’s the kind of thing that makes me want to shout, AMEN!
And on a personal note, here is a little face to smile at today…
thanks to a new friend who volunteered at New Day recently.
We just received some new measurements for Samuel and we are so pleased to get the chance to do something that has become a family tradition with each of our adoptions.  The pulling out of the tape measure.  We love to size up how big our new addition is and the kids all love comparing against themselves.  These little traditions make his coming all the more real.
We can’t wait to have you with us buddy.  You have some eager siblings all ready to have you join our herd.
Boy, the internet sure is a wonderous thing, isn’t it?
Walk the Wall to End Child Abandonment
Each year Steve & I grow in our determination to partner with an amazing organization that is very close to our hearts, International China Concern.  We first learned about them one Sunday a number of years ago.  We had been attending a Chinese Baptist church in the city we used to live in, and I remember being so impressed by the calling that the young founder and his wife had to reach out to children in China.  The thing that stood out to us was that they were all about helping Chinese families stay united and therby reducing the astronomical abandonment rate in China
Abandonment of Chinese children happens for many, many reasons, but one of the significant ones is due to the fact that there is no system of socialized health care there.  Compound that with the fact that most families (yes, even with the growing numbers of Chinese middle class and the country’s over all economic growth) live well below the poverty line, even by Chinese standards.  In a situation like that, parents sometimes find themselves faced with only one option  in order to find medical care for their child – abandonment.  The hope is that their child will be found and given the care that they need to survive.
Not a fathomable situation, that’s for sure.
What Steve and I love about ICC is that fact that in addition to providing family-like care homes for children with extremely complex or life long disabilities, ICC also provides education, support and medical care to families who would have otherwise been forced into making a decision to consider abandonning their child.
Once a year, the children in their care in Changsha (the capital of Samuel’s home province of Hunan, where we will officially become his forever family!) and Hengyang walk a 10km walk in order to raise money for their projects in China.  And ICC supporters around the world join them in their walk all in their home cities.  The goal is to have enough supporters join them that they will be able to collectively walk the length of the Great Wall of China.  An ambitious goal!
I won’t be able to join the walk in body this year (yes, I’m s.t.i.l.l. on crutches!), so I thought I’d share it with my online friends instead.
Visit the Walk the Wall  site to see how you can sponsor one of these amazing kids on their walk and take a look at their video (lots of amazing kids!)
